Awesome! I'm really not going to have many suggestions for this section. As always, I'll try to include download links to everything I post.

Sin City ... Frank Miller (7 Volumes, Completed)
Fantastic pulp storytelling... one of the few things Frank Miller has written that stands the test of time. Any comic which features a cop ripping out a pedophile's genitalia is manly win in my book. laugh.gif

Punisher MAX ... Garth Ennis' principal run (60 issues, and one-shots)

Don't make the mistake of thinking this is yet another American superhero comic book. No supervillians, no superheroes. Low-level crime drama. This is a true masterpiece on par with the Golgo 13 manga, except far shorter. Like the Golgo 13 manga, the drawing quality fluctuates, but the story quality rarely does.

Says wikipedia:
Whereas the traditional Punisher stories remained within the United States and involved antagonists and settings of conventional domestic crime, stories of the MAX Punisher often focus on current events, ranging from corporate fraud to sexual slavery, and The War on Terror. Many characters are past or current intelligence and military operatives from governmental agencies like the CIA, KGB, Secret Intelligence Service, SAS, militaries and militias from the Balkans and Middle East, also including the IRA, all with agendas rooted in past conflicts like the Cold War or the Yugoslav wars.

And now I'm officially out of suggestions that immediately jump to mind.
ZombieToaster
Ah, Garth Ennis. Gotta ad 303 by him. Also adding some other stuff as I remember them.

Man, have I been living under a rock! I've always thought Western comics were all along the lines of Superman, Batman, Spider-man, X-men and the like... I never heard of anything this badass. Hey, this topic is rebuilding my regard for Western comics that Superman At World's End destroyed...

Also, lol at the second picture of ZT's second post. That's probably one of the most grotesquely hilarious things I've seen.

Glad to have helped. Thats why I make these threads smile.gif

Its sad how alot of people think all western comics are superman and spiderman. Its just like how alot of people think all manga is pokemon and naruto.

Oh, here's an enjoyable independent comic that I read a couple of weeks ago. The creators have released it for free online, with a collected volume to come out in the future.

Jesus Christ: In the Name of the Gun ... Peterson & Nicolle (1 volume, completed)
Since God is lazy and disinterested in the human race, Jesus and Ernest Hemingway take it upon themselves to travel back in time to assassinate Hitler. What sounds like a silly premise primarily intended to offend is actually a very well drawn and executed action piece.

Well... Hitler is a bit of an overused villain... at least it can't be as bad as Superman At World's End.

"Adolf Hitler!.... Two of you!"

Oh gosh, that comic was terrible. I couldn't even finish it.

Robert Crumb

I wont put any titles of this guy in the list unless someone else wants me to. Its sexistic and often gratuitus enough to be called porn. That being said he is a great artist and writer. His comics often discuss philosophy and problems he sees in society. Hes also done many autobiographical works.
Also plenty of hippie shit. biggrin.gif

ZombieToaster
Juan Jose Ryp

His art is detailed as shit and he almost exclusively does art for avatar. A company that you might have noticed that I love from my other posts.

dxInt
Ah yes, Juan Jose Ryp is quite a talent! I started reading Black Summer solely because his artwork was mesmerizing, but the story eventually lost me. I've also read "Robocop". Wolfskin looks pretty cool.
ZombieToaster
Frank Millers Robocop was one of the first comics I read on my computer.
LordDio
Some of this looks quite interesting. Wow. Thanks, ZombieToaster. Anyways, I've only ever read a few comic books, each one because of its movie tie-in, and only one which hasn't been mentioned;

Frank Miller- 300

It doesn't have the whole bullshit Spartan queen side-story, and does a slightly more effective job of story-telling than the film.
ToguroBruto
Besides of every Punisher comics (especialy Ennis+Dillon), I Recomend:
Terror INC. David Lapham and Patrick Zircher
Conan The Cimmerian Kurt Busiek+Tim Truman+various and Cary Nord+various
Red Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer
The Dark Knight Returns Frank Miller and Klaus Janson
Hard Boiled Frank Miller and Geof Darrow
Fury Garth Ennis and Darrick Robertson

Spoiler:
smile.gif
ZombieToaster
Please write who made each of those and ill ad em (I can see the names on afew covers but not on all of them)

edit: Im talking writer and artist. Fuck colorists tongue.gif
ToguroBruto
Sorry 'bout that. happy.gif

Tim Vigil

Another artist who has done stuff so extreme that they would have ended up in hentai if america was japan. A true Indie hero smile.gif

The master in action smile.gif
First vid starts with him sketching. You can hardly see anything but thats just for the first 35 secs.

edit: fucked up the youtube links. Fixed now.

Well done, ToguroBruto! I really need to read that Nick Fury limited series.

Hard Boiled Frank Miller and Geof Darrow

After seeing that awesome cover, I just had to read it. And it's good. A neat bit of violence. That being said...it lacked something.

I enjoyed it, but it just didn't feel as exciting, brutal, and action-packed as something like Ichi the Killer or Grappler Baki. And frankly, the conclusion was a disappointment.

Spoiler:
You're telling me that the robot "Barbara" didn't have any more elaborate plan than "stand back, let Nixon fight, and when he loses against impossible odds (which isn't even directly shown), commit suicide? Also, what the hell is up with his encounter against Blanche or Number 2? She takes an ungodly number of bullets and a grenade inside her body without a single scratch on her metallic interior, but a couple of punches kill her? I know that "realism" is the last thing these comics are intended to have, but internal consistency is an absolute MUST.

Edit

Oh, and ToguroBruto...thanks an awful lot for providing the download links. Really appreciate that, since I don't know of any centralized place to download Occidental comics.

...I AM A MAN!

In the words of Janice from friends; OH...MY...GOD!!! HAHAHAHAH! I really had to push myself to read this to the end, but man, what a terrible story! Did a 5 year old's write it or something? And those dreadful one-liners: CURSE YOUR GUNS! I SAID "WHOA"! Really, really, really bad! There is one good thing about it though; I really can't wait to pass this on to an unsuspecting friend as a comic masterpiece just to see their face laugh.gif

Another good suggestion that I forgot, even though it's in my (small) personal collection. I'll add download links, after I've downloaded it laugh.gif

Road to Perdition ... Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner (1 volume, completed)
The awesome b&w comic that the movie was based on. If you don't like reading, I highly recommend you check out the movie, because it's great, too. The writer acknowledges that he was heavily influenced by "Lone Wolf and Cub," except this takes place in America during the prohibition era. The art is unique and expressive. I think it's quite a shame how much the movie overshadowed the original comic.
ZombieToaster
I like the use of big vertical panels. Are there lots of that in the book?

Actually, almost entirely. Seems to go by a 2x2 panel structure. Never noticed that, but this comic is pretty unique in that respect.

Walking Dead - Robert Kirkman (ongoing)
This is a rather violent b&w comic book about a zombie apocalypse, but what really makes it stand out is the terrific story. To give you an idea of it's quality, this independent comic has been running for more than 60 issues, with no signs of slowing down. I just started reading it today and haven't been able to stop.

ZombieToaster
I read the first 29 issues when that was all that was out at the time. Its the kind of story you'd see if Romero's zombie movies were instead made as TV series or something.

Ive been meaning to pick it back up for a while.
dxInt
Cool, I got as far as issue 28 yesterday.

Ironic that you mention it being a tv sort of story, AMC bought the rights to adapt it into a television series a few weeks ago!
ZombieToaster
Hmm, I hope thats a channel like HBO that wont cencor the violence.
Lye
i just heard about it too. amc is a basic cable channel, so theres no way they will get away with a large amount of gore, even late at night. The story of Walking dead was always what made the comic good, not the gore, so it should work. but still...

Walking dead was what got me back into comics, as I read it every month from issue like 5 until issue 20 something. I havn't read it in years though, so... I doubt I have time to pick it back up to be honest.
ZombieToaster
You could always just download it tongue.gif
ZombieToaster
Bruce Jones is one of my favourite comicbook writer of short stories. He is also a quite good artist, but its in his stories he shine the brightest.
He has done mostly sci-fi fantasy and horror.

Art not by Jones.

ZombieToaster
Tim and Joe Vigil is at it again. Now releasing their new mini called Sinbuck. A spinoff of their old Gunfighters in Hell comic. The layouts in the few pages Ive seen seem a lot less crazy than they were in the old series. But that could be seen as a good thing If you hate anything confusing tongue.gif
